Aims.
"Art and Design as a unit is both a form of communication
and a means of expression of ideas and feelings. It forms a language which
compliments those of the literary, mathematical, scientific and factually
based subjects and is especially concerned with the development of those
complex mental processes involved in visual perception and aesthetic experience"
From the Cambridge A'level Art syllabus.
GENERAL
To provide a stimulating and structured environment which will nurture
the pupil so that he or she may develop an independence and maturity in
the expression of ideas in visual form by the increasingly confident and
skillful use of materials. This development may be summarised as a list
of necessary qualities and criteria essential for the developing individuality
of the art student as well as the well rounded and culturally aware citizen.
1. Self esteem, fulfillment, and enjoyment. 2. Visual awareness. 3. Technical
skills and knowledge. 4. Awareness of cultural and historical heritage.
APPROACH
Most of the work in this department is materials based, but extensive
use is made of library and audio visual facilities. Cultural, historical,
experimental, and environmental references are woven into group and individual
work where appropriate, and vocabulary specific to this subject is used
and explained as an integral aspect of the teaching process. Throughout
all age groups there is strong emphasis on the practice of observational
drawing. Opportunities for cross - curricular links are sought and exploited.
- through drama productions and work with the drama and music departments,
with the junior department through joint activities and exhibitions, with
the English department through joint creation of the school magazine,
with both E.F.L. and Special needs departments for help with individuals,
and with other departments as appropriate. Due to the nature of Sidcot
as a part boarding school, pupils come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
In the choice of projects we encourage all pupils to explore different
cultures both present and past. We aim to treat all pupils equally, irrespective
of race, gender, creed, or ability, and encourage individual pupils to
explore their own cultural roots through their art work. The work of the
Art Department has value in the development and education of all pupils.
Art is a powerful tool in a growing awareness of life - personal and creative,
cultural and multi-cultural, spiritual and aesthetic.
